Ashton Shaw Despot - artist spotlight
Ashton shaw Despot
Claire Elizabeth Gallery is pleased to spotlight local artist Ashton Shaw Despot and her newest smalls collection “Summer’s Glow”. Despot is a Contemporary Impressionist painter who specializes in waterways of South Louisiana. Originally from Lafayette, an area known for lush oak trees, verdant bayous and a rich Acadian culture, Despot captures what is “home” and specifically that magic moment of the Summer when sunset settles in.
In the artist’s own words:
“In this collection, I wanted to capture that feeling of stillness along the water and the warmth of the summer air. Summer in South Louisiana can be hard to bear if you’re not on the water. But when the sun wanes and the heat subsides, there is this beautiful glow of the last rays of light, the trees are illuminated and the distinct sound of cicadas plays in the background in a way that is almost magical. In this body of work, I used a light palette to try to highlight the joy and wonder that summer brings.”
Ashton Shaw Despot is a graduate of Louisiana State University. She has shown her work in Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi and North Carolina. Despot currently lives and works in New Orleans.
