Artist spotlight - Rosemary Goodell
Claire Elizabeth Gallery is pleased to spotlight artist Rosemary Goodell. Goodell is a Louisiana-based painter and printmaker, who graduated with a BA & MFA from The University of California, Berkeley. She received a Fulbright Fellowship to travel and study in Japan where she discovered the art of printmaking, which continues to influence her work today.
Color, pattern and asymmetrical balance are hallmarks of Goodell’s work. In her newest collection, the viewer might recognize several “butterflies”. In 2022, the artist had a life threatening accident which put her in the ICU & hospital for a month. During her recovery period, the butterfly, a revered symbol of transformation, started appearing in her work as sign of hope, healing and the “possible”.
Goodell focuses her studio practice on creating monoprints, a one-of-a-kind print created by arranging pre-inked shapes and patterns onto a plexiglas plate. The plate is then set on a printing bed, covered by acid free paper and run through a heavy press which transfers or “prints” the shapes and colored inks onto the paper. Monoprints are different than other forms of printmaking in that the artist only uses the plate and design once - no exact image or colored arrangement is repeated.
Goodell’s work is included in a number of private & public collections. She received a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 2016 and was awarded a fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center in 2017. In September of 2024, she will have a solo exhibition in the United Nation’s Alabano Building. For more information on Goodell’s work or for a catalogue of available monoprints, please, email us.
