VERDANT - PAINTINGS BY MARY SINGLETON

The Claire Elizabeth Gallery is present a solo exhibition for Mary Singleton, "Verdant", which is now on view. A public reception with the artist in attendance will be held Sat. July 15th from 5-8 pm. For this body of work, Singleton found inspiration in her own personal growth and in particular, her new home in Old Algiers - an area of New Orleans that sits along the Mississippi River and has become a haven for creatives and musicians. The artist moved to this vibrant neighborhood, which is known for its colorful historic Creole cottages, in 2020 and immediately found inspiration in the subtropical palette not only of the architecture, but also the lush gardens filled with local florals and botanicals.

In the artist's own words:

I take daily walks throughout the neighborhood which serve not only as a form of meditation, but a chance for creative inspiration. During this ritual, I find myself absorbing the colors - the pinks, blues and purples - of the Creole cottages in my neighborhood, noticing the lush growth from neighboring gardens and hearing the sounds of music wafting out of windows and from porches. This experience makes me reflect on how we absorb a place and make it our own - creating roots and growing in a place we call home.

Singleton is a Louisiana-based artist. She graduated from Louisiana State University with a BFA in Studio Art and has shown her work throughout Louisiana, South Carolina, Texas, Alabama & Tennessee. Singleton's work is included in a number of private and public collections including Oschner Hospital, Children's Hospital, Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and Copper Vine/Brechtel Hospitality.
